Poverty Viewed From a Mission Perspective
The New “EMS Insights” Is Out!
The latest issue of EMS Insights is now available. It’s entitled “Share your bread with the hungry. Poverty and justice".
The churches and mission societies in the EMS firmly believe that mission, justice, faith and the fight against poverty are all interlinked. Our God is a God who sees people’s needs and who cares for the oppressed. This is also what the new EMS Insights is about.
Poverty can only be overcome if we put a stop to the exploitation of people and nature – this is the position taken by Dr Djoko Wibowo, Head of the EMS Indonesia Department, in the main feature of the current issue. Rev. Felix Weise emphasises in his theological reflection on Isaiah 58:6-8 that whenever people stand up for justice, they will experience God's nearness.
The terrorist attack by Hamas on 7 October 2023 represents a new level of escalation in the conflict between Palestinians and Israel. How can things continue when all that remains are ruins? This is the question examined by Dr Uwe Gräbe, EMS Middle East Liaison Secretary.
In 2015, the United Nations adopted 17 goals that should lead to sustainable development worldwide over the next 15 years. But what has been achieved so far? Rev. Michael Starck, advisor to the Church Development Service of the Protestant Church in Baden (EKIBA), makes a sobering appraisal at the half-way mark.
In addition, the latest issue of EMS Insights contains loads of news about EMS networks, associations, programmes and projects.
EMS Insights is published twice a year in German and English. Both issues are available for download in e-book format. Printed copies of the 20-page magazine in German can be ordered by phone on +49 711 636 78 60 or just send an email to info@ems-online.org.
