The latest issue of EMS Insights is now available. It is dedicated to the topic of “So that we may gain in wisdom. Death and eternal life”.

From the Moravian graveyards in Greenland to the mountain tombs of the Toraja and the Hindu funeral pyres on the Ganges, the latest EMS Insight offers unusual glimpses into the burial customs of different cultures. Special attention is paid to the interreligious and intercultural contexts in each case. Many of these customs are shaped by the differences between Christianity and other religious beliefs. A closer look at these concepts can help us to better understand our own cultural identity and beliefs.

“God’s message of salvation applies to all people, regardless of their origin,” says Joseph W. Acheampong, minister of the Presbyterian Church in Ghana (PCG). Read more in his theological reflection on Matthew 8:11: "Many will come from east and west and will eat with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven.”

Do women deal with death and mourning differently than men? Women are portrayed as more emotional and open in dealing with grief. This is reflected in their willingness to talk about their feelings and to actively experience the grieving process. On the other hand, they are also often disadvantaged and discriminated against by social expectations and traditional role models. Members of the EMS Women's Network from Ghana, South Africa and Lebanon share their experiences with the readers of EMS Insights.

Last year, the EMS funded projects and programmes of its international members to the tune of about €2.65 million. “The funds were used for initiative projects in the field of education and raising awareness to promote diversity and justice,” it says in the 2023 Financial Report. The latest EMS Insights prints excerpts from the report.

The new “EMS Insights” is now available on our website for downloading as an e-book. Printed copies of the German edition “EMS Einblick” can also be ordered by phone from +49 711 636 78 60 or just send an email to info@dont-want-spam.ems-online.org
