With a strong sign of connectedness and shared responsibility, an important step toward a more child-friendly church within the international EMS community was taken in Cape Town.

From 25 October to 3 November 2025, nine representatives from various EMS member churches gathered at the invitation of the Moravian Church in South Africa (MCSA). Their common goal was to develop guidelines that place children at the center of church life and strengthen the commitment to their rights and their spiritual growth.

The international working group contributed its diverse experiences, perspectives and local challenges. Through intensive workshops, practical recommendations were developed for congregations, children’s ministry teams and church leadership bodies. The guidelines intentionally draw on the voices of children and young people who were consulted beforehand in a variety of contexts. They reflect what young people hope for from their church: safety, appreciation and genuine participation.

A key element of the conference was the exchange of proven methods from member churches across continents. How can safeguarding measures be implemented effectively? Which spiritual approaches strengthen children in different cultural contexts? And how can inclusive spaces be created where all children—regardless of origin, gender or social background—feel welcome? The delegates discussed these questions openly and learned from one another.

The host church, the MCSA, also offered participants insights into its rich spiritual and historical heritage. Encounters with local children’s groups and youth made the concerns of the guidelines particularly tangible: delegates witnessed vibrant congregational life and spoke directly with young people about what a child-friendly church means to them.

In the end, the outcome was more than a shared document. The conference became a milestone for the global EMS community – a space for learning, spiritual deepening and mutual encouragement. The participants renewed their commitment to a church that protects, strengthens and accompanies children – and that truly values their gifts.

Together they reaffirmed their mission: to shape churches in such a way that every child feels seen, loved and supported, and has a safe place to encounter God.
