EMS Christmas Card: The Wise Men From the East

Send festive greetings and do a good deed

info_outline

This year, the Evangelical Mission in Solidarity is once again offering a special Christmas card. The design comes from Korea and shows the three wise men from the Orient bowing down before Jesus Christ. When you buy this card, you are not only sending festive greetings but also helping children and young adults in a meaningful way.

The profits from the sale of the Christmas card go to the EMS Future Fund for Education. The EMS uses this fund to provide direct support for children and young adults. Whether it's fair educational opportunities, safe shelters and a roof over their heads, help for families in need or empowerment through participation – buying the Christmas card is a sustainable way to help improve the future of children in the world.

The design of the Christmas card shows a detail from the stained-glass windows of the Andong Church (PCK) in Seoul, South Korea. The church windows created by Kim Gil-Hong in 1980 give a Korean perspective to biblical scenes, e.g. the three wise men wear headdresses that identify them as members of the Korean upper class: an officer, a king and a court official bow down before Jesus Christ. This helps Christians in Korea to find their own place in the Christmas story and the three "Wise Men from the East" came from much further east than previously assumed.

The card comes with a meditation by Rev. Dr Dieter Heidtmann, General Secretary of the EMS, who reflects on the meaning of this picture. “The three wise men invite us to join them on their journey, to share their gaze and to find our own place in front of the manger.” He emphasises that the story of the Wise Men from the East is representative of all people and reminds us that the Christmas message is universal. (Read the accompanying meditation here.)
