India: Severe Flooding in Kerala
EMS helps. Please join us!
Heavy rains two weeks ago caused massive flooding and landslides in the southern Indian state of Kerala.
Particularly in the rural region of Wayanad, in the villages of Mundakkai and Chooralmala, the monsoon rains have left a trail of devastation. After days of heavy rains, several landslides occurred within four hours on the morning of Tuesday 30 July.
The Evangelical Mission in Solidarity (EMS) is supporting the emergency relief efforts of the Church of South India (CSI) and is urgently appealing for donations for the victims of the natural disaster. The CSI is a member church of the EMS and will pass on donations directly to those affected.
According to CSI, more than 400 people have already lost their lives since the rains began. Authorities expect the death toll to rise as more than 200 people are still missing. A large number of aid workers are working non-stop to provide people with basic necessities. Rescue work is progressing slowly as much of the infrastructure has been destroyed. The situation remains very tense as the rain continues.
Bishop Royce M. Victor asks the international community for support
Dr Royce M. Victor, Bishop of the Diocese of Malabar, says this was one of the deadliest natural disasters in Kerala's history. “At this time of great sorrow and need, we appeal to the international community for support. The affected families are in urgent need of help to alleviate the immediate hardship and for long-term reconstruction.”
Church of South India helps on the ground
Many congregations and members of the Church of South India (CSI) have been affected by the floods. Working with local authorities, the CSI has set up relief centres and temporary shelters. Church staff and many volunteers are helping the people on the ground. They are distributing food, clothing and medicines. They are also providing pastoral care to traumatised victims.
