A heart for children and ministry

We are delighted to introduce Boneta Neethling as a new member of the EMS Children's Program. In this article, she talks about her previous professional experience and her motivation for working with children.

I am incredibly honored to be part of the Moravian Church, a tradition that began in Genadendal—the first mission station in South Africa. The Moravian legacy of faith, community, and mission continues to shape my ministry today, especially in my work with children. My name is Boneta Neethling, and I’ve been serving as a Sunday school teacher since 1995. In 2003, I stepped into a leadership role within the Moravian Sunday School Union in South Africa, and in September 2019, I became the National Sunday School President until September 2024.

I believe that children are a vital part of the church, and it’s my mission to help them feel welcomed, valued, and loved as they learn about God. I strive to present God’s word in ways that are accessible, engaging, and meaningful to them. It’s my prayer that through my teaching, children will understand God's love in a way that resonates with their hearts and minds, building a foundation of faith that will last throughout their lives.

In addition to my work with children, I am deeply committed to training and supporting our Sunday school teachers. I believe that by equipping teachers with the tools and knowledge they need, we are building up strong, effective Christian leaders who can guide and nurture the next generation of believers and leaders.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my journey has been my involvement with the EMS Child Friendly Church Koodam, a platform that has significantly broadened my horizons in children's ministry. This opportunity has deepened my understanding of how churches around the world can become more inclusive and supportive of children’s spiritual growth. The experience has also enriched my ecumenical work, allowing me to connect with fellow believers from different backgrounds and cultures. It has been a privilege to see how we can all work together to create environments where children are not only welcomed but are also encouraged to grow in faith.

As I look to the future, I am excited about the opportunity to be further involved with the EMS Children’s Programme. I am eager to share what I have learned over the years and contribute to initiatives that support the spiritual development of children across the global church. I am passionate about continuing to equip children’s ministry leaders and fostering environments where children can thrive spiritually, emotionally, and socially.

In addition to my ministry work, I am blessed to be married and the mother of one son. My family is my greatest source of support and joy, and their love helps keep me grounded in both my personal and professional life.

Through my work with the Moravian Sunday School Union and my involvement in the global church community, I am committed to nurturing the next generation of believers. It is my hope that, together, we can build a world where every child feels seen, heard, and valued, and where they can grow into the fullness of God's love.
